Our Mission at Bird Friendly Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes is to educate the community on the importance of bird conservation and how to create bird-friendly spaces in Peterborough.

Objectives:
  • Increase awareness of the importance of bird conservation in the community.

  • Provide information on how to create bird-friendly spaces.

  • Increase community engagement in bird conservation efforts.

  • Increase the number of certified bird-friendly spaces within Peterborough

  • Become a regional hub for bird-friendly activity, including partnering with surrounding communities such as the City of Kawartha Lakes and the municipalities within the County of Peterborough

Activities:
  • Workshops: Host workshops on bird identification, bird behavior, bird-friendly landscaping, and how to create bird-friendly spaces. Workshops will be led by experts in the field and will be open to the public.

  • Bird Walks: Organize bird walks in local parks and natural areas to observe birds in their natural habitats. These walks will be led by experts in the field and will be open to the public.

  • Community Outreach: Partner with local organizations to distribute educational materials on bird conservation and how to create bird-friendly spaces. This will include brochures, posters, and online resources.

  • School Presentations: Partner with local schools to provide educational presentations on bird conservation and how to create bird-friendly spaces. These presentations will be tailored to different age groups and will include hands-on activities.

  • Bird-Friendly Certification: Create a program to certify businesses, schools, and public spaces as bird-friendly. This program will provide guidelines for creating bird-friendly spaces and will recognize those who meet the criteria.

  • Increased awareness of the importance of bird conservation in the community.

  • Increased knowledge of how to create bird-friendly spaces.

  • Increased community engagement in bird conservation efforts.

  • Increased number of bird-friendly spaces in Peterborough.

  • Increased number of businesses, schools, and public spaces certified as bird-friendly.

  • Create formal partnerships with surrounding communities such as the City of Kawartha Lakes and the municipalities within the County of Peterborough

 

Evaluation:
  • Pre- and post-program surveys to assess knowledge and attitudes about bird conservation.

  • Attendance at workshops and bird walks.

  • Number of educational materials distributed.

  • Number of schools participating in the program.

  • Number of businesses, schools, and public spaces certified as bird-friendly.

  • Number of formal partnerships with surrounding communities such as the City of Kawartha Lakes and the municipalities within the County of Peterborough

  • This community outreach program would be designed to educate and engage the community in bird conservation efforts, with the ultimate goal of creating a more bird-friendly city. By providing information on bird-friendly landscaping, bird behavior, and the importance of bird conservation, the program would help residents of Peterborough create bird-friendly spaces in their own backyards and public areas. The bird-friendly certification program would recognize those who make the effort to create bird-friendly spaces and encourage others to do the same.
