Bird Friendly HERO Program for Schools!

Introduction

The Bird Friendly Hero Program is an elementary school level initiative that provides teachers and students with opportunities to learn more about birds. By working through these three modules, and taking action in their school communities, any class can be certified as Bird Friendly Heroes!

In this program we will cover

Bird Friendly 101

Bird ID (Level 1) - basic bird
identification of species in
Peterborough & the Kawarthas

Bird habitat basics - The top 5
threats facing birds and how to
deal with them properly

Bird Friendly 102

Bird ID (Level 2) - bird
identification of several species
in Ontario including migratory
and resident birds

Bird habitat enhancements -how existing natural, rural, andurban habitats can beenhanced for birds

Bird Friendly 103

Bird ID (Level 3) - advanced
bird identification of most
Ontario species, emphasizing
Species-at-Risk and invasive

Bird habitat conservation -larger issues facing birdpopulations and how best tomake peoples’ aware

Take Action!

Bird Friendly Hero Certification requires one of the following bird-friendly classroom activities:

Volunteering with bird-friendly organizations approved by BFP

Bird habitat enhancements and modifications for their classroom and/or school

Citizen science projects related to birds

Apply for Certification

Teachers of classrooms that have completed all 3 modules AND taken action in their community may email evidence of their classrooms bird-friendly actions and confirmation of module completion to info@birdfriendlypeterborough.ca. Any questions or inquiries can also be sent to the same email address!
